ASIAN PARAXYLENE: Weekly increase of $4/mt due to upstream strength / Weak demand hinders PX margin recovery / Petronas plans to turn around Feb-Mar 2022

During the week ending December 18, a V-shape movement in Asian paraxylene markets was observed. The CFR Taiwan/China marker fell to $826.83/mt midweek, and rebounded to $836.33/mt Dec. 17. Trader liquidity was less liquid during the holiday season. One source spoke of the cautious attitude taken by participants towards the end of the year. Sources suggested that the market was still in negotiations for the 2022 term. However, there were some settlements. During the week, discussions were focused on February deliveries. During the Market on Close assessment process Dec. 17 one Asia-origin February cargo trade was conducted between Mercuria Singapore (at $837/mt Dec. 17), before SKGC offered the same price. The earlier narrowing in the PX-naphtha spread, which had fallen to a record low midweek, has returned to $129.33/mt.
