Asian Methanol: Prices hold steady amid regional holidays / Methanol demand in South Korea mixed / Asian end-users covered by term volume

Asian methanol prices closed the week steady with thin trading activity Oct. 3 as China and South Korea were closed for week-long regional holidays. Fundamentals in South Korea’s and Taiwan’s methanol markets were mostly balanced, with end-users covered by term volume, traders said. Demand for spot cargoes in South Korea picked up before the market closed for the mid-autumn harvest festival holidays, with some purchases from formaldehyde and MTBE producers, said a trader. “The market this week seems a little bit better than the first half of September,” the trader said. However, methanol demand from Taiwan and South Korea’s acetic acid sector has been affected by AA capacity expansions in China, which have weighed on Far East Asia’s AA prices, buyers and sellers said.
