Asian Methanol prices: stable to weakening on cautious outlook / CFR China down to $1.50/mt -May/June backwardation deters flat-price discussions / SE Asia fundamentals are bearish due to ample supply

The Asian methanol markets remained calm and quiet during the week ending May 9. Participants were cautious about volatility in upstream markets. CFR China methanol was down $1.50/mt per day to $256.50/mt, while CFR Southeast Asia remained stable at $340/mt. The Yuan 35-40/mt (or $4.84-$5.52/mt) backwardation in China between May and Juni prevented buyers from purchasing spot cargoes for a flat price. Discussions for May-loading methanol cargoes took place at a premium of 1.5%-1.6% to the ICIS Specific Origin CFR China price. The Southeast Asian methanol markets appeared to be weak due to a tepid demand for methanol and abundant supply.
