In the week ending July 11, Asian glycols fluctuated within a small range. Monoethylene glycol demand weakened due to the reduction of downstream operating rates during the slow season. According to market sources, operating rates for polyester plants in China ranged between 86% and 87% during the week. Meanwhile, MEG plants operated at a rate of 67.57%. Buyers were still concerned by the volatile crude oil price, and late-week drops capped their appetite for buying. September ICE Brent futures were down $1.05/b from day to day, at $68.96/b on July 11. Some sources cited falling polyester operating rates for the weaker MEG market, since run rates usually fall below 85% in the summer months.
