demand remains low; derivatives trade poorly- China's low
operating rates make it difficult to get supplies.The week ended August 19 and saw few
discussions in Asia's ethylene markets as there were still limited offers. Although buying
indications remained unchanged at $780-790/mt for the week, several sellers
stated that they could not offer cargoes at these levels due to high freight
rates and production costs. Overall,
buyers were not buying as they felt there was no urgency to buy due to the drop
in operating rates downstream. Market
sources indicated that operating rates at the polyethylene (PE), Eg (EG), and
styrene monomer (SM), facilities are running at a low level for several months.
