US monoethylene glycol spot price rose sharply in week ending Jan. 6. This was
due to widespread outages that caused a shortage of spot supply. Some
plants were already offline due to economic reasons. However, others had
problems with their production or with upstream units because of the extremely
low temperatures in December. Lotte declared force majeure in the US MEG
Dec. 24, citing storm-related problems. An additional producer was
believed to have established volume allocations, but this could not
confirm. Due to this, only a few US MEG plants are currently in operation,
