European Benzene & Styrene : Styrene price increases as the environment remains erratic / Access to materials mitigates the weak downstream appetite for SM / Quiet benzene conditions close out the week

On May 9, European styrene prices rose on the May 9th market as supply and demand fundamentals continued their erratic behavior. Styrene spot prices for five to 30 days rose by $62/mt to $1,287.50/mt FOB AAR, as a result of increased bidding. The reduced supply has helped to offset some of the weak demand that had previously lowered prices earlier in this week. However, the disparity between availability and appetite is still fueling participants' uncertainty. Prices have fallen $76.50/mt since May 2 despite the increase in the daily 5-month pricing. This demonstrates the volatile market conditions. In June, prices will remain unchanged at $1.145/mt, despite the steep market backwardation.
