- Benzene follows the crude trend- Forward curve in contango

US Gulf Coast benzene declined on the day,
despite a lower Sept. 13 trade. September
benzene traded at 282 cents/gal DDP USDG. Sources
indicated that benzene would likely move with crude volatility in the near term
due to reduced demand for styrene. Crude
futures were lower upstream on September 13 due to an unexpected rise in US
inflation, which fueled recession fears and drove the US dollar higher. NYMEX October WTI closed 47 cents lower at $87.31-93.35/b,
while ICE November Brent fell 83 cents to $93.17-100.50/b. Sources say that the forward curve is still in contango, as
styrene production will resume in October and November.
