The European butadiene markets remained
stable in the week ending Sept. 2. Buyers were still looking for prompt
material. The
FD NWE European Butadiene spot price was stable at Eur1,580/mt on the day. Spot prices were supported by healthy activity in Europe
during the weak period. Much of the demand
came from consumers who were trying to replenish their stocks after logistical
problems caused by August's drop in Rhine River water levels. Some participants expected that the high levels of trading
activity would be temporary as downstream participants were suffering from
weakening demand, and high input costs. This was a bearish sign for the
butadiene industry. SBR, a major
derivative from butadiene, was used by tire producers in September. This was
