The US Gulf Coast benzene price fell last
week due to multiple converging factors. A decrease in the larger energy
complex was one reason. NYMEX
December WTI crude oil settled at $80.95/b. This was up 91c/b on the previous
day, but down $5.97/b (nearly 7%) from one week ago. "The offer has dropped and no one is bidding. Cumene is no longer going in the gasoline pool. "The falling demand for ethylbenzene creates a Catch-22
situation. It may increase styrene manufacturing margins but it eliminates an
alternative for many styrene manufacturers who have stated in recent weeks that
they have redirected benzene from styrene production to ethylbenzene.
